Alan
Hewson; Lead Vocals, Bodhran, Bongos
Alan spent his childhood in
the north east of England, in an environment dominated by fishing, shipyards and
coalmines. With Scots, Irish and Northumbrian ancestry, the echo of those
traditions run in his veins, & from an early age he loved the traditional
music of the northeast. A rock drummer as a teenager, at 15 he played honky-tonk
in a local pub, whilst also playing snare drum in the Boys Brigade. On leaving
school, he discovered and flirted with rock 'n' roll and country music before
taking to the folk clubs in the late 1970s as an unaccompanied singer. Since
then he has performed with several bands, & plays for Ceilidh band Millrace.
Alan has sung in clubs and festivals throughout England and Scotland, & has
often been heard on local & national radio since singing his prize winning
song entry ‘The Children’ on Pete Castle’s radio program in 1981;
the song appears on the first Tam Lin album, Farewell to Reason. Alan
is the founder of Tam Lin & the principal lead vocalist.
Sava Malbaski; Guitar, Flute, whistles, lead vocals
Sav was born in 1970, growing up in a
musical household in St Albans. He started studying properly at
11. Classically trained, he took 3 years to get Grade 8
distinction on both flute and clarinet, including a special award
from the RSM for passing the highest three grades in succession
and short order. He attended the London College of Music, and got
his Associate Diploma (ALCM), before being expelled in his second
year!
Sav started playing folk with a local musician about five years
ago, and has played with two local bands, Windward, and more
recently, Drake's Drum. Sav says his weirdest job ever was miming
to Phillipa Davies playing the flute so that his hands could be
filmed as part of the opening credits to the 1988 season of Young
Musician of the Year competition. One of his hobbies is writing, & he is
also an enthusiastic composer, two of his compositions appearing on the CD Back
on The Road Again. If you think his face looks familiar, you watch too much
telly - Sav has appeared as a an extra on a variety of programmes, including
Eastenders & Casualty.
Aidan Broadbridge: fiddle, vocals
Aidan began playing for dancing at the age of 12, and
has played for the annual Assembly Ball in Scotland every year since. He won a
scholarship to Sweden, where he continued Violin & Piano studies for 2
years, returning to take a degree at Trinity College of Music. Despite his
classical training, he is noted for his driving Scots Fiddle style of playing
and an exceptional ability to extemporize.
