Senior QA Engineer

Salary: c. 34k + bonus to 8% + comprehensive benefits

Based in West Berkshire, our client is a very successful software solutions company. Working as part of a cross-functional project team, the QA Engineer will ensure product quality by generating and executing product functionality tests and identifying, raising and reporting product defects to a Test Lead.

Main duties/responsibilities

  • Generate high-level strategy and estimates of test effort and approach based on the Requirements Specification, Functional Specifications and Change Controls
  • Review all test deliverables for coverage and suitability and provide feedback to the author, facilitating external reviews with stakeholders as required
  • Participate in project risk workshops with the cross-functional project team, representing the QA risks and issues
  • Review project plans and determine short and medium-term work plans, planning own time to ensure completion of objectives and delivering the schedule to the specified project timescales
  • Solicit feedback from Test team after each project phase and represent Product Test at post-project reviews with the cross-functional project team to help improve working process
  • Drive Root Cause Analysis investigations into test escapes, reviewing for trends or areas of weakness, and reporting findings to Manager
  • Analyse Change Controls, reporting overall product impact to the project team
  • Use training sessions, presentations and team meetings to advise and assist Test Engineers on technical issues, explaining systems and facilitating information-sharing and problem-solving
  • Produce reports on number of tests executed, significant results, gaps in coverage, opportunities and risks, to track overall progress, make efficiency improvements and reliably manage projects
  • Explain test results, trends and potential issues to relevant software developers, technical writers and other departments, and seek feedback. Make decisions on where further test activity should be directed, raising significant impacts with Manager
  • Proactively investigate, identify and implement processes to increase testing efficiency

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Turning high-level estimates into detailed test plans for others to execute
  • Tracking deliverables of the team against test plan and external milestones
  • Experience of manual execution of test cases to test a complex application or component in a commercial environment
  • Detailed knowledge of the testing responsibilities and processes within the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Producing written reports on test activities, opportunities and risks, and explain recommendations to management.
  • Identifying defects (software, documentation, etc.), raising and tracking them to resolution
  • Successfully owning, planning and driving a project from inception to completion
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements for test efficiency
  • Scripting to aid manual testing (using languages such as Python, Perl, Visual Basic)
  • Reviewing test estimates from other engineers to ensure appropriate coverage and risk

Desirable

  • Using Test Automation tools to create test scripts, based on manual test steps (using tools such as QTP or WinRunner, or languages such as Perl or Python)
  • An Accounting or Business Studies qualification, for example Degree, BTEC, HND or AAT
  • Good general knowledge of accounting principles to trial balance level(Accounts)
  • Good general knowledge of trading principles
  • Using Microsoft Project to create and track test schedules
  • ISEB Foundation
