Software Release Engineer

Salary: to £37,000 + Bonus up to 8% + VG Benefits

Based in west Berkshire, our client is a very successful software solutions company. As Release Engineer you will organise, direct and manage activities for building and maintaining software releases for their promotion to a customer production environment. You will ensure that the various components of a particular software release meet customer needs and are integrated and released on time with high quality, reflecting the appropriate scope, cost and time for the company.

Main duties/responsibilities

  • Accountable to the QA Manager to drive the delivery of releases in alignment with the overall strategy and vision of the product roadmap
  • Act as a single point of contact for delivery
  • Provide management oversight of the release process, including delegation of responsibilities to all staff required to ensure successful delivery of the release
  • Allocate / balance available resource supply against forecast demand
  • Develop and communicate detailed release plans and set delivery expectations with key stakeholders. Update and communicate release status. Escalate issues in a timely manner where required
  • Interact extensively with the functional team leads in the estimation cycle, identification of inter-team dependencies, delivery plan validation, impact assessments, issue tracking / resolution, and status reporting
  • Ensure user acceptance tests completed, all defects addressed and signoff on all content. Ensure all required regression testing activities were completed successfully
  • Verify with the project manager that the required training was provided to the appropriate groups e.g. Support, Implementation Consultants
  • Ensure a comprehensive back-out plan exists and was validated
  • Ensure the release is deployed according to the release plan
  • Monitor the production environment post-release for any unexpected situations, and make sure remedial action is taken as quickly as possible
  • Facilitate post-release evaluation meetings to discuss issues and identify improvement opportunities after major releases
  • Act as a conduit to communicate the release plan and assess change activity impacts to the release plan
  • Coordinate cross-team integration activities
  • Proactively identify and manage situations or concerns that adversely affect service delivery. Escalate issues as required to manager and reviews the proposed action plan
  • Support the quality management process and take an active part in formulating the resulting recommendations and developing action plans to facilitate their implementation

Knowledge/experience

Essential

  • Degree qualified, preferably in a Computer Science, Computer engineering, or related field or equivalent level of qualification
  • Proven experience in taking responsibility for the functionality, availability, and reliability of software build and release processes
  • Experience of software version control systems e.g. CVS, Perforce, Subversion
  • Knowledge of RCM concepts (codelines, branching, merging, integration, versioning etc.)
  • Knowledge of *nix based OS
  • Strong process knowledge of System Development Life Cycles

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience in release and configuration management roles
  • Solid project management experience
  • Previous experience of working with merchant or distribution businesses in the supply and delivery of IT business systems
  • Understanding of accounting terminology/practices, especially with regard to financial reporting and/or ERP systems
  • Experience of evolving change control procedures
  • Working knowledge of a scripting language (e.g. Perl, Python, VBScript)
  • Experience of technical issue resolution and diagnosis
  • SQL skills
